Killer: Edmund Kemper III
  • Kemper murdered six college co-eds, who had been hitchhiking from their California college campus, from May 1972 to February 1973. After killing them, he would bring the corpses back to his home, sexually assault them, dissect the bodies, and later dispose of the body parts in the hills of California. Kemper also murdered his own mother with a hammer, as well as a family friend, both of whom he decapitated and raped. Prior to these offenses, Kemper murdered both of his grandparents at age 14.

Killer: Charles Manson
  • After gaining complete control over his followers, Charles Manson, a self-proclaimed spiritual guru, led four of his followers to murder pregnant actress Sharon Tate and her four guests in her Beverly Hills home in 1969. Two days later, Manson ordered six members to kill and mutilate Leno LaBianca and his wife in their Los Angeles home. Manson's followers would frequently leave spiritual messages on the walls written in the blood of the victims.

Killer: David Berkowitz
  • Known as the "Son of Sam," Berkowitz shot and killed six young men and women, who were parked in their cars in lovers' lanes in New York City from July 1976 to July 1977. Berkowitz would frequently terrorize local newspapers with his letters taunting the police to catch him. When apprehended, Berkowitz maintained that a neighbor's dog was telling him to commit the murders.

Killer: David Carpenter
  • Nicknamed the "The Trailside Killer," Carpenter brutally shot and stabbed eight females and one male, who were hiking in the San Francisco Bay area, from August 1979 to May 1980. For some time, Carpenter was thought to be the Los Angeles Zodiac Killer, another unidentified serial killer who was active at that time.

Victim: Francine Elveson
  • In October 1979, Francine Elveson (age 26) was brutally murdered by Carmine Calabro on the roof of her building complex in the Bronx. She was severely beaten, tied spread eagle with an umbrella inserted into her vagina, her nipples were cut off, and there were bite marks on her body, all indicative of a disorganized killer and crime scene.

Killers: James Odom and James Lawson
  • Becoming friends in prison, these two men fantasized about raping and dissecting females. After their release in the 1970s, they kidnapped and killed a female store clerk, raping her and engaging in cannibalism with her postmortem body. The mixture of organized and disorganized behaviors exhibited at the crime scene suggested two offenders.

Victim: Betty Jane Shade
  • On May 29, 1979, Betty Jane Shade was sexually assaulted by her boyfriend, Charles Soult, and stabbed from her vagina to her rectum. Soult had also removed her breasts and cut off her cherished blond hair. It was later discovered that Soult's brother and sister both helped in the disposal of the body.

Victim: Mary Frances Stoner
  • In December 1979, Mary Frances Stoner (age 12) was raped and strangled in the woods of Georgia by Darrell Devier (age 24). This crime was a rape of opportunity, as indicated by the unplanned and disheveled appearance of the crime scene.

Killer: Wayne Williams (a.k.a. Atlanta Child Murderer)
  • From July 28, 1979 to May 24, 1981, Wayne Williams strangled and murdered 14 children (ages 8-27) in Atlanta, Georgia. Williams would also revisit the crime scenes to relive the excitement of his murders. Ultimately, this was how Williams was apprehended. During the trial, Williams eventually confessed to the crimes after intense psychological cross-examination. Williams was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison.

Victim: Jud Ray
  • Jud Ray, a special agent for the FBI, was shot in his home by two men who were hired by his wife to kill him.

Killer: Robert Hansen
  • From 1979 to 1982, Hansen kidnapped five prostitutes and hunted them in the forests of Alaska. This case is reminiscent of the literature story "The Most Dangerous Game."

Victim: Karla Brown
  • On June 20, 1978, Karla Brown was found dead in her cellar-- strangled, naked and bound, with her head submerged in a bucket of water. The perpetrator, John Prante (her neighbor) was identified through bite marks left on the victim's body.

Victim: Linda Haney Dover
  • On December 26, 1980, Linda Dover's body was found, wrapped in a blanket, in the crawl space of her house. She had been stabbed and severely beaten by her husband, who had tried to "stage" the murder to look as if a stranger had committed it.

Killer: Larry Gene Bell
  • On May 31, 1985, Shari Smith (age 18) was kidnapped from her front yard and murdered in South Carolina. Her killer, Larry Gene Bell, contacted the victim's family by phone and talked to them about what he had done to their daughter. He also forced his victim to write a "last will and testament" prior to her death. Bell kidnapped another victim, Debra May Helmick (age 9) from her home two weeks later, and murdered her in the same style as he did with Shari Smith.

Killer: Tylenol Murders
  • In 1982, Tylenol capsules were being laced with cyanide in Chicago pharmacies. The profile of the offender indicated that the perpetrator was motivated by his anger towards society in general. The offender was never caught, but the crimes ceased.

Killer: Arthur Shawcross
  • Shawcross murdered numerous local prostitutes and "street people" in Rochester, NY, from 1989-1990. Post-mortem mutilation of the bodies suggested that Shawcross was returning to the crime scenes to spend time with his victims.

Killer: Green River Killer
  • Beginning in July of 1982, six female prostitutes were found dead in the Green River outside of Seattle. All of the victims had been suffocated, and small rocks had been placed inside their vaginas.

Killer: BTK Killer
  • In 1974, the Otero family was bound, tortured and killed inside their home. The man and his wife were tied and strangled with cords. The son was found tied to his bed, suffocated with a plastic bag. The daughter was hanging by her neck in the basement. The BTK killer contacted the local newspaper and claimed credit for these murders. Several more killings of women occurred that fit the signature of the BTK killer, but then the murders abruptly stopped. The identity of the BTK Killer is still unknown.
