St. Martins girl went missing coming home from friend's house
By Matt Grant
Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 10:53 p.m.

ST. MARTINS -- Police are searching for a missing 9-year-old St. Martins girl.

Elizabeth Olten was last seen around 6:15 p.m. coming back from a friend's house, a quarter mile from her own home, according to Cole County Sheriff Greg White.

A family member says Elizabeth was last seen around 5:15 p.m. walking on Route D. She was returning home but never showed up.

Search teams are using flashlights to comb the area. Elizabeth was last seen wearing a pink sweater over a T-shirt with butterflies when she disappeared. She was also wearing blue jeans and white sneakers.

Police are searching and have a search team assembled at the Extreme Body and Paint shop where they have been since 7:30 p.m.

So far the highway patrol has not issued an Amber Alert.

No other details are available as of 10:20 p.m., when White confirmed crews were still searching for the missing girl.

Police find body of missing 9-year-old Mo. girl
By CHRIS BLANK

ST. MARTINS, Mo. The body of a missing 9-year-old Missouri girl was found in a wooded area near the state capital on Friday, two days after she was last seen walking from a neighbor's home, police said.

Cole County Sheriff Greg White said a juvenile, described only as a "person of interest," was taken into custody. The juvenile was acquainted with the girl, Elizabeth Olten, White said.

The sheriff not give any details on how Elizabeth died or about the juvenile in custody except to say that the person lived in the area west of Jefferson City and was older than the girl. Police said Elizabeth's body was found just before 3 p.m.

"We were able to obtain some physical evidence and through some analysis of some of the evidence and in all honesty some written evidence, we were able to develop a person of interest," White said. "Once we reached that person and interviewed them, ultimately they led us to where we've recovered Elizabeth's body."

Elizabeth was last seen when she started walking home from a neighbor's house on Wednesday evening. A woman who answered a family spokeswoman's phone Friday said Elizabeth's family had no immediate comment.

White said had spoken with Elizabeth's mother and said the family is "deeply grieving."

"I'm a parent, and I know how I would feel. I would simply leave it to you that they are grieving," he said.

Earlier Friday, about 70 people had searched for Elizabeth on horseback, with all-terrain vehicles and on foot while another 70 investigators checked leads, White said. Several hundred people had joined the search Thursday despite a steady rain and rough terrain.

Police focused their search area after they figured out roughly where Elizabeth's phone was located. White said the phone was later found but declined to say if it had turned up evidence.

15-year-old faces hearings in girl’s death
St. Martins case a juvenile matter.

By T.J. Greaney

JEFFERSON CITY — Cole County juvenile justice officials said a 15-year-old girl suspected in the murder of 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten of St. Martins has two court dates ahead.

The first, a detention hearing set tomorrow, will take place by conference call at 9 a.m. and will determine whether she should remain in custody or be released into the community while awaiting trial. Cole County Juvenile Court Administrator Michael Couty said his office will ask that a judge order the juvenile to remain in detention at a juvenile facility.

Couty said the juvenile, identified by another official as female, has met with her family and her lawyer, Kurt Valentine. Couty declined to say where she is being held or describe her demeanor.

“We are taking every precaution that we need to take in order to ensure the protection of that individual,” Couty said at a news conference.

He characterized the case as “unusual” and said it is the first juvenile murder case in Cole County in four years.

Protecting our children from our children

"Children can be nasty, don't you think?" The Bad Seed

This week a fifteen-year-old girl in Missouri murdered a nine year old girl. The attorney for the teenager is asking the court to wait and find out what the girl's all about, Alfie.

Do we really need child psychologists here? The teenage girl is quite simply a diseased brain in a little girl's body. She shouldn't get to be released into the custody of her parents. She shouldn't be examined by a fleet of experts to determine whether or not she's capable of rational intent. She most certainly should be tried as an adult.

There are a lot of cases where I'd argue against a minor being charged as an adult for a crime, but when a kid sends an invitation to another kid for the purpose of luring them to a secluded area so they can commit murder, then hides the body so well the searchers overlook the body, I'd say that was adult level reasoning. It's the very definition of "Malice Aforethought" and there aren't a lot of people who can't distinguish between right and wrong who could pull something like that off. Bottom line; if you hide the body, you absolutely know the difference between right and wrong. People don't hide things if they think what they did was right. We aren't exactly talking about anonymous donations to a charitable organization here.

It will be days, months, weeks, or maybe even never before we find out the real reason this teenage girl murdered a nine year old. In the meantime, there will be lots of speculation, examinations of the girl's parents and home environment, tons of guess work on the part of the media, and experts touting all manner of "dark secrets" that factored into the atrocity. I'd be willing to bet almost nobody comes to the conclusion that the girl may very well have just been a plain old rotten kid. There are such things you know. Surely you've met a pair of truly decent parents doing the best they could with the kids they have, yet one of the pack manages to pull off antics that boggle the mind. Then, just when they think they have the kid situation under control, a neighbor's pet goes missing and the bloody collar is found under the kid's bed. Yes, that's an extreme case, but it's exactly where we get a lot of our prison residents.

The teenager led the police to the nine year old's grave. This will probably set the stage for her attorney to tell everyone that it was an accident and that she was expressing remorse. The jury will hopefully be reminded that the girl didn't exactly volunteer the information of her own volition. She waited until the police had a little chat with her as a person of interest due to evidence they'd gathered. My grandpa used to ask us, "Are you sorry or are you just sorry you got caught?" This would be an adult reasoning that it was time to backpedal as fast as her feet would take her. This would be remorse that she'd been caught.

She'll probably end up getting a minimum sentence with a ton of therapy. After all, she's only a child, right? In about ten years, she'll be turned loose on the streets to hunt down other children after having all that time to find the flaws in her first act. She'll do it better next time. My heart goes out to her victim, her parents, and all her future victims and their families. Wouldn't it be nice, though, to see that just once, someone could stand up and have the heuvos to say "This person is done hurting others. There are no do-overs in real life."

the 15 year old had or was she trying to emulate something or had been influenced by something such as the spate of recent juvenile vampire movies.

Olten Murder Suspect to Remain in Custody

JEFFERSON CITY - The teenage suspect in the murder of Elizabeth Olten will remain in junvenile custody while a Cole County judge decides whether to try the suspect as an adult.

Cole County Circuit Judge Jon Beetem also heard arguments Wednesday morning as to whether the public should be allowed at a November 18 hearing where he will decide whether or not to try the suspect as an adult.

Authorities took the 15-year-old into custody last Friday. The Cole County sheriff has not released the suspect's name or gender, but the first hearing in the case will take place Wednesday.

Most juvenile offenders are held in the Prenger Family Center in Jefferson City, but the court is not stating where the suspect in the Olten case is being held, nor will they comment on his or her demeanor. The court says it is taking every precaution to protect the suspect.

Olten went missing last Wednesday and nearly 1,000 volunteers joined in the search. Police discovered physical and written evidence that led them to the suspect, and after an interview the suspect led police to Olten's body.

OK this is really frosting my um er cake.

They have no qualms in naming the rape suspects in California, and I read in Missouri a person age 12 and up can be charged as an adult.

So..that being said who or what are they trying to hide?
They have already stated that the person in custody (age 15 ) lead them to the body, admitted guilt so what's the darn holdup?

After much research, news archives, etc. I do know the suspect's name.
Her friends (or ex friends) are very forthcoming with her name, father's name, etc. I am not going to name her, although I could, but I'm waiting for court's permission. That family sounds really screwed up, as well as Elizabeth Olten's family too. Did this little girl even have a chance?

Here's the latest................

Cole County's circuit court has set some extra security measures for Wednesday morning's hearing to determine whether the 15-year-old accused of killing Elizabeth Olten, 9, will be tried as an adult.

Judge Jon Beetem ruled two weeks ago the 8 a.m. hearing would be open to the public, including news reporters, but that no cameras or other recording devices will be allowed in the courtroom.

In a news release issued Monday afternoon reminding the public of the hearing, the court noted: “In addition to the normally prohibited items (such as knives, firearms and other weapons), cell phones, digital cameras, other audio and/or video recording devices, personal digital assistants and laptop computers will not be permitted to be brought into the courthouse on the 18th.”

Anyone who is stopped by the security officers because they have those devices will be told to return those items to their vehicles. The court news release noted those items “may not be left at the security screening station for later retrieval.”

The court's news release also noted only 36 seats will be available for the public's use Wednesday morning.

“Those persons who wish to view the proceedings must be present at the Monroe Street entrance to the courthouse at 7:45 a.m. on the 18th, ready to go through security screening,” the court release said. “When all of the public seats have been (filled), there will be no further admittance to the proceedings.

“Anyone who leaves during the hearing will not be readmitted.”

Olten's mother reported her missing about 6:45 p.m. Oct. 21, when the girl did not return home from a friend's home a quarter-mile away. Both homes are on LoMo Drive, also known as Route D, just south of the U.S. 50 interchange at St. Martin's.

After nearly two days of searching by law officers, firefighters and numerous volunteers, Cole County Sheriff Greg White reported last month Olten's body was found in the woods behind her home after the suspect in the case was interviewed, then led authorities to the location where the body was found.

The teen has been in the juvenile authority's custody since being detained Oct. 23.

Wednesday's hearing is to determine whether juvenile authorities can provide continuing treatment for the accused teen, if he or she is retained in the juvenile court system, or if the teen can be served better in the adult system.

If Judge Beetem determines the teen should be tried as an adult, then the Cole County prosecutor would have to file charges and a probable cause statement against the suspect for the case to be continued - the same procedures as required in all other criminal cases.

If you go

Instructions for going through the Cole County Courthouse security for Wednesday's hearing:

- Visitors will be asked to empty everything from their pockets into baskets next to the metal detector in the basement, then hand the basket to the officers at the security checkpoint.

- Visitors also are to remove all bracelets, watches, wallets, pins, pens, large earrings and necklaces and place them in a basket.

- Belts also are to be removed before going through the metal detector.

- No food, drink or aerosol cans or sprayers will be allowed past the checkpoint, and those items will be disposed of and not saved.

* As always, all purses and other carry-in items, such as briefcases, will be X-rayed.

- And the list of items never allowed in the courthouse remains the same: Knives (regardless of the blade length), scissors, firearms and chemical mace or pepper spray.

Security measures amped up at Olten hearing
By News Tribune and Associated Press
Published: Wednesday, November 18, 2009 5:58 AM CST

Cole County's Circuit Court has set some extra security measures for this morning's hearing to determine whether the 15-year-old accused of killing Elizabeth Olten, 9, will be tried as an adult.

The teenager, whose name and gender have not been released by police, is accused of first-degree murder in the death of Elizabeth Olten. Law officers say the teen led them to Elizabeth's body in a wooded area near St. Martins.

The teen has been held in juvenile custody since last month. Cole County Judge Jon Beetem is scheduled to hear arguments on whether the teen should be prosecuted as an adult.

Under Missouri law, children as young as 12 can be charged as adults with first-degree murder. Ten factors are considered in deciding how to treat juveniles accused of crimes. All must be evaluated, but Beetem does not need to weigh them equally.

Among the factors: the seriousness of the crime; whether viciousness, force or violence was involved; whether people or property were affected; the suspect's criminal record and background; and the individual's age, sophistication and maturity.

If Judge Beetem determines the teen should be tried as an adult, then the Cole County prosecutor would have to file charges and a probable cause statement against the suspect for the case to be continued -- the same procedures as required in all other criminal cases.

Court officials have planned extra security measures for the hearing, which is open to a limited number of citizens. Cell phones, laptop computers, tape recorders and cameras all have been banned from the courthouse and those who attend the hearing can't re-enter the courtroom once it has started. Law officers at a security checkpoint in the court basement also will be screening more items.

Been tweeting privately with a reporter OUTSIDE of the courtroom, since no communication tools are allowed INSIDE the courtroom.

Waiting on final word. Speculation is that they judge may delay his decision on releasing her name/trying her as an adult.

Not sure, just speculation.
